Illinois RiverWatch Freshwater Mussel Workshop

Location: Urban Stream Research Center, Blackwell
Saturday, July 15, 2017
9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The District is hosting an Illinois RiverWatch Freshwater Mussel Monitoring Workshop, an environmental education program that provides participants with the unique, hands-on opportunity to learn about monitoring freshwater mussels. Freshwater mussels are mollusks that inhabit our rivers and streams and are excellent bioindicators of water quality. Due to water pollution, half of the freshwater mussel species in North America are proposed to be listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern.

Participants will learn about freshwater mussels in an interactive workshop, then head outside to do a mussel survey at a local stream. The workshop includes manuals, materials and professional training to become a citizen scientist. Data will help track the condition of Illinois streams, as well as to identify exceptional mussel communities in need of conservation. Please register online by July 9. Registration is $50 for adults and free for Illinois 4-H members. Children may attend but must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Please contact Matt Young, RiverWatch Coordinator, at 618-468-2784 or email riverwatch@lc.edu with questions.
